 | Cornerstone Angling Skills Training (CAST) | |
 |
CAST is an educational angling project established since 2003 working full time with funding from Big Lottery Fund, Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Connexions, Environment Agency and Nottinghamshire Community Foundation. Additional income is raised by charging clients for workshops and bespoke courses offering accreditation for young people including BTEC, OCN and Youth Awards. Schools, Nottinghamshire Learning Centre, Youth Offending Service and Social Services are among the client base.
In addition CAST develops community based volunteer led groups who work with young people in their own communities. The project uses angling as a means to inspire and motivate young people to develop an interest in and enjoy learning by teaching them how to set out to catch specimen sized fish of a variety of species. This becomes a transferable skill.
CAST encourages young people to recognise the merits of learning skills in order to achieve goals and understand the links between education and success. Activities and groups developed by CAST are designed to engage young people in long term project activities and in the case of community based projects this long term programme is supported by the recruitment of adult volunteers and the development of social enterprise activities.
